Mark Williams

With the hype for upcoming Highschool Musical 3 stirring young girls up into a frenzy, you kind of want to sit them down, give them a talking to about what young talent is, and then introduce them to Mark Williams and his band. A 16 year guitar virtuoso, Mark has played with such greats as B. B. King. What is pleasing here is that Mark can play, but Mark can also sing too. At times his voice sounds so familiar you could swear you'd heard his song on the Top 40 last weekend? With the amount of self-promotion that Mark and his band have plastered across the web a big break is just days away for this young star. I just hope you all get to him before Disney does!

Hot Track(s): Airwaves, Secrets

Kind of Like: The Foo Fighters are skipping third period and jamming down in the music room with Mr. Opus.

PREDICTION:
A top 10 hit on the U.S. modern rock chart. A top 40 in the U.K. will follow.

Whale Tooth

It takes only one listen of any Whale Tooth track to realize why they have what it takes. The raspy lead vocals provided by jazz by day artist Elise LeGrow are what makes Whale Tooth, well, pretty damn good. She hits each word with an intensity that contrasts the obviously carefree sound of the backing soundtrack. Matching LeGrows skill is tough, but the boys in the band do carry their own, both musically and vocally over all tracks. With a number of local gigs happening in and around the city of Toronto, where they are based, Whale Tooth is attracting a following and will soon find themselves playing sold out concert halls across the country.

Hot Track(s): Hibernation Song, Marlboro Beach Bonanza

Kind of Like: 90's alternative rock grows up and becomes radio friendly

Escort

It might of been a year ago since we were hit with one of the hottest tracks in decades "All Through the Night" by the disco kings Escort. The song was beyond anything we had heard in years we have been waiting patiently for more ever since we first spinned the track. As we try not to get tired of waiting, we will simply have to revisit what made us fall in love with Escort in the first place (see clip below), and hope that 2009 is the year that they give us a full album.

Walter Meego

What comes next? We have heard the 80's come back. The synths, the beats, the look. Walter Meego is ready to take it to the next level. With a funky retro sound, what we have here is much more depth than most pop acts. Sure the vocals aren't the source of that depth "Everything I do I do it for a girl, I do it for a girl, I do it for a g-irl-irl", but the vocals are where the sound turns solid. High-pitched and Beatle-esque you can't help but stop and realize that Walter Meego is giving us pop music to take seriously.

Hot Track(s): Girls, Forever.

Kind of Like: John Lennon channeled through a Casio keyboard.

PREDICTION:
A top 20 hit in the UK with a summer hit in 2009 in the US that makes them a hit with all the young ladies.

Ms. Chawls

This Canadian songstress has enough soul in her to convert a country of non-listeners. Her sound is retro, but Ms. Chawls still manages to use her classically soulful voice to take her music in a different direction (she is no wannabee, this is the real deal). Presently touring around North America as a part of several festivals and opening for other artists, we are sure that one day she will be headlining.

Hot Track(s): Think of You, Can I be yours

An already popular band with over 2 million hits on their MySpace page and an upcoming performance on David Letterman, Black Kids are on their way up. Seamlessly mixing all that makes an artist successful (music and image), they have taken a sound we are familiar with (electro/alternative/pop) and added their own Black Kids magic making it pure brilliance.

Hot Track(s): I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You, Hit the Heartbrakes, Hurricane Jane.

Kind of Like: The Cure release something relevant written by the Killers.

PREDICTION:
A top ten hit in the U.K. and a track that makes it onto the Modern Rock chart in the U.S.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor vs Roisin Murphy

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is busy working on her next album, and below is one of her new songs (her next single?) The video is a montage of old footage, just listen to the song.

Is it a cover? Or karaoke? Any thoughts?

ELECTROCUTE

When the name of your band is ELECTROCUTE, as in cute, as in cute as a button, you probably realize that not many people will take you seriously. Unless you immerse yourself so far into the surreal, name, image, sound and all, that in the end, you end up being a credible two person band. With a track that appeared on the 2004 SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Soundtrack these girls are in the business of making kitsch and bizarre, cool and confident. Following the age old adage of "if you build it, they will come", ELECTROCUTE have the total package (Japanese girl pop sound right down to the skin-tight hot pants)...now it is up to the public to start buying it.

Florence and the Machine

Music is a drug. It is highly addictive, and artists are the pushers. Creatively trying to get us back for more. Pop music, (i.e. Katy Perry - I Kissed a Girl) is like MSG. So savory and heavily produced you have no idea that you are being drugged. Eventually MSG won't do it for you anymore and you will need something a little harder to keep you satisfied, in comes crack-cocaine (i.e. Florence and the Machine). Dark and dangerous, and highly addictive, Florence will have you thrashing around your living room in no time. With a sound that fluctuates between rockabilly, ska, pop, and grunge she has the edge that we have been waiting for in a new and upcoming young female artist.

Hot Track(s): Kiss With A Fist, Throwing Bricks

a helpful diagram

Whimsical can be cool. It can be a great soundtrack to a dinner party, a rainy afternoon or the next big feature film. The sound being pushed out by a helpful diagram has a laid back and dreamlike nature, think lying on the grass staring at clouds. It is in this fresh sound that we hear the potential. A voice full of emotion, backing guitar and naturally crescendos in attempt to convey the feeling of every note played and every lyric being sung. The final product is a bit more than music really, it becomes a form of art. Really good art.

White Punks on Dope

Sometimes finding cool new music can be a difficult and time consuming process. There is a certain amount of searching that needs to happen before a solid track is found. It is always a pleasant surprise when a friend makes a suggestion about some of their new picks, and voila, a new favourite is discovered just like that. The discovery here is the emerging act known as White Punks on Dope. The beats are house influenced and will make you want to dance. The vocals are well matched to the electro nature of the sound, giving the boys a definite robot-chic factor that makes listening to them a really cool thing to do. As they continue to play with their sound we will stay tuned and hope that they keep turning out tracks as relevant as those already part of their discography.

Hot Track(s): Chemicals, Destination House
Kind of Like: Tiga starts hanging out with Justin Timberlake

PREDICTION:
A top 10 hit on the Billboard Dance Charts (Clubplay and Radio).

Dr. Dog

We have been swamped with pretty little things (Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi) all taking us back a couple of decades. In doing so they have been seen as innovative and new. Dr. Dog trumps all those ladies with not only going back a few decades, they're hitting it back a century. The album feels like a modern day collection of spirituals. Through the sweet scratchy vocals of lead singer, Scott McMicken, each phrase, each word becomes a piece of ear candy allowing the listener to immerse themselves in a feeling, the spirit that is Dr. Dog. These boys have being doing their thing for a while now, check out their website (http://www.drdogmusic.com) for their brilliant back catalogue. All the practise Dr. Dog has had has paid off. The image is complete and has all the right elements to ensure unlimited success. Make sure to check Dr. Dog live as they will be in a city near you very soon.

Hot Track(s): The Breeze, The Old Days

Rob Dean

This is what I am talking about. True raw talent. When you listen to Rob Dean you can tell that you are listening to, well, Rob Dean. Nothing has been sweetened, no effects layered on the vocals, what you are listening to is a very talented young fellow. On his MySpace page Rob talks about not being clear in purpose, so let me help him with that...two words...make music. If Rob Dean can keep churning them out in time to ride the wave of public interest he might have to deal with overnight success.

Captain

Captain could easily be the closest you will get to 80's pop in the year 2008. A solidly polished sound is what Captain is all about. The music is great, but sadly the image and look not as clear. I guess it can be hard deciding on an image when you're not sixteen and making music. Perhaps Captain should leave the smoke and mirrors to their younger counterparts as they have something that several artists don't have today, talent. I see great things in Captain's future!

Hot Track(s): Keep An Open Mind, Echoes of Fashion

Robots in Disguise

Okay, so I am sure you have heard about the Ting Tings, and if you haven't you have probably heard their track played on the iTunes ad recently. Well, I've got the real deal for you today. Robots in Disguise are the next big thing. We have two ladies here who have an infectous electro punk feel that matches (and surpasses) anything on the radio right now. We can't ignore the cool factor. The fuck you attitude that comes through hair, make-up and clothes make this act a fun one to get lost in. Touring around the UK, playing all the big festivals, it won't be long until Apple comes a knockin' for a bit of Robots in Disguise. An interesting fact is that Noel Fielding has been involved with the band since their 2001 self-titled debut. He produced the cover art.

Lily Allen

We all know who Lily Allen is. We loved her first album. Loved the attitude. Love that Perez Hilton wants to be her (a skinny pretty girl), hence the hate/hard on and now we can't help but keeping loving. Lily has just posted a new song on her MySpace page called G W B. For those that need it explained the song is about a certain bomb dropping President. Well timed, I think the song might make a suitable soundtrack as we watch him leave the White House. We are enjoying the new tracks, and are positive the album will match its predecessors success.
Update: The title of the song G W B, has been changed to Guess Who Batman.

WRAP IT UP:

Amit

If I could take an artist and offer support to them (spot him a twenty, carry his cables or manage him free of charge for the summer), this would be the artist. The pure sound that Amit produces makes you just feel good and like you are connecting to something greater than yourself. Amit, being a smart fellow, has built up a certain amount of mystery about himself (usind childhood pics, hiding behind chunky glasses) which leaves you wanting to find out more about the person behind the solid music. Timeless, the tracks are meant to convey as Amit puts it "happyism" and "idealism". I think it goes without saying that both are met without issue. I am excited to follow Amit as he explodes onto the global music scene over the next year.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): You and Me and Love, One Day
Kind of Like: A marriage between Badly Drawn Boy and Feist - or perhaps Amit is just the child they had out of wedlock.

Update - The Madame Project

These girls have really stepped it out. The last time we heard them, they sounded like a few girls singing along to their favourite girl band CD. No longer. This is now the real deal. Their recent tracks are so well produced you have to listen closely to make sure you aren't listening to Girls Aloud, or another ultra-successful girl group. The metamorphosis is almost complete.

WRAP IT UP:

Lykke Li

Not a new act. Lykke Li is already on her way to being a superstar in the UK. Her album has just been released and her first single is already getting tons of airtime both on radio and television. This post is meant to highlight how an artist like Lykke goes from being an indie princess to being a top 40 hit. Alright so she might have worked her ass off, sure...but it is also interesting to notice that in her latest video her hair is slick. Key word here, slick. Her good looks, and slick image help us take note of her talent. Boy oh boy, is there talent. All one has to do is first watch the video for "I'm Good, I'm Gone" below, and then watch a live performance of the same song (also below). And yes that is indeed Robyn helping her with the live performance. All I can say is wow. Here is hoping Lykke Li international success and a top 40 hit in North America too.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): I'm Good, I'm Gone, Breaking It Up.

The Brother Kite

Isn't it nice when you come across a band that not only produces great music, but also has a lead singer that can really sing. The Brother Kite matches that description. Patrick Boutwell provides the lead vocals for the group and they really are key in the sound that The Brother Kite is all about. With the reverb always slightly on it sounds like Patrick is singing in a wide open field (or into a tin can), but the purity in his tone complements the retro pop-rock feel that we have here. Sometimes alternative and rock needs to be about more than thrashing guitars so kudos need to be sent out to the remainder of the band for providing Patrick the backing he needs for his instrument.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): I'm Not The Only One, Waiting For The Time To Be Right
Kind of Like: ELO, The Beach Boys and the Cure thawed, after being cryogenically frozen in a single test tube, have started to work with Foo Fighters.

Kakkmaddafakka

Summer is upon us and we are searching for a soundtrack for it. These boys, from Bergen, might have just what we are looking for. Edgy pop that works well on the dancefloor, but also has the lyrics to keep you singing while on a roadtrip. There are a number of influences at play in the music that Kakkmaddafakka are producing. At times you feel that you are listening to an old polka record, but then the lyrics kick in and you realize that this isn't polka. A perfect mix of kitsch and cool these boys are a favourite of mine.

Purple Crush

Is pop dead? I don't think so. Purple Crush doesn't think so, and once you hear their latest tracks you won't think so either. A duo out of Brooklyn, this boy and girl team pair rich vocals with poppy beats right out of the 80s. Even when edgier beats are used, the smooth vocals make the tracks pure pop and easy to listen to. Purple Crush has found a following in Europe and have been remixed by the likes of Shir Khan pushing them even further into the world of pop stardom. Purple Crush has been working at developing their radio friendly tunes for about four years now and if they keep it up a year or so longer, they will have guaranteed success.

the 8485

Every once and a while there is a band that comes along, and you listen to them, and love the sound, a sound that reminds you of something. In this case the sound that 8485 cultivates calls on classic hip-hop, the beats make me feel like I am in middle school. Making the sound modern are the electronic blips and hums under the tracks. This is what makes the 8485 old school - new school. Then I look at the pictures of the boys behind the music, and there is a huge discrepency. They look like two of the nicest, sweetest boys, the kind that would say please and thank you, yet they are the minds behind some of the dirtiest sounding tracks. Once these boys get their image figured out, perhaps a stylist out there wouldn't mind lending them a hand, they will be on their way. The music is too good to ignore, so check it out and watch the transformation take place as the 8485 explode.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): Forty and a Fistfight, Don't Worry Hell Below
Kind of Like: MSTRKRFT teams up with a lighter Bubba Sparxxx who is less obsessed with booty.

The Saturdays

Seeing that today is indeed Saturday, and from where I am writing this the sky is grey and it is pouring rain, I thought something light and upbeat would be perfect for today, so I present The Saturdays. A group made up of five young, pretty girls all with different looks (think of being in the Barbie aisle at a toy store), there is no guessing here. When you see the girls dressed in their spandex outfits, fully accessorized with hair and makeup perfectly done, you know exactly what you are in for. Sweet, palatable pop. With the support of big names like pop queens Girls Aloud, who The Saturdays will be opening for on their upcoming tour (good idea to keep your enemies closer Girls Aloud!), and the fact that part of the band come from the sort of, once, kind of famous S Club 8, these five girls are bound to become a force to contend with on the pop charts.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): If This Is Love
Kind of Like: Girls Aloud becomes collector cards. (Each girl from The Saturday has a myspace page making them "individuals" and showcasing their "diverse" styles. You can become friends with one, three or the whole band. The tween market will eat it up!

Santogold

Okay so maybe Rolling Stone was talking about Santogold in the Fall, but even then they couldn't really articulate what Santogold was about and where they were heading. There isn't a simple way of describing what we have here. Is it retro sounding? Is it funky? New Wave? I can't really put my finger on it, but whatever it is, it's good. Santogold is a girl who spreads her carefree vocals over great backing tracks produced by, well, a boy. The vocals effortlessly sway from 80's rock chick to present day rap star. Santogold make sure the vocals match the mood of the overall sound. The pieces all fit. So with their upcoming appearance on Conan O'Brien, and the release of their album next week, you will be hearing about Santogold all over the place.

The Rayees

We are still dealing with a pupa here. Although the members of The Rayees have known each other their entire life, their sound is all over the place and I have a feeling that is intentional. The positive here is that we have two individuals who trust each other enough to explore their creativity together and most of the time, the product is, well, pretty impressive - especially when we are dealing with their folkier/bluesy side. The Rayees work very hard not only with their music, but their image development has been ongoing. One look at their MySpace page makes clear the amount of thought The Rayees have put into every little detail of their look (right down to the matching stars).

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): Nights Only Here By Chance, I'm ready

Little Hannah Collins (a member of The Heavy)

Sometimes I like a bit of dirty. Dirty in several ways. Dirty like a 70's porn soundtrack. Dirty like it makes you want more dirty. Dirty like they couldn't afford any better equipment to record on. All dirty makes Little Hannah Collins, well dirty, and in a damn good way. If you are looking for some new soul to add to your dinner party playlist, then Little Hannah Collins has something for you. Also a member of The Heavy, Little Hannah has what it takes to make it on her own (i.e. a voice and the looks) The vocals provided by Little Hannah Collins are classic and yet unique. Thao with the Get Down Stay Down

Sometimes I hear an artist and think "why have I never heard of them before!?" That is how I feel about Thao and the gang. With a folky sound, Thao takes their cue from recent trends. Just like other successful folk acts on the charts today the sound is poppy enough to be handled by the preteen crowd, but the vocals are genuine enough to be both adult and music critic friendly. The simple laidback image, free of sequin pant suits, matches the mood of the music. Music that will become a perfect soundtrack for the summer of 2008.

Verdict - Sam Sparro

PREDICTION:
A top 40 hit in the U.K. and success in North American dance clubs.

VERDICT:
Yes, my first prediction to come true is the one I made about Sam Sparro back in February. Not only did he make the top 40, he has made the top 10 with "Black and Gold" reaching number 4 on the U.K. charts.

Tiny Masters of Today

I would hate for Tiny Masters of Today to be branded a novelty act. Although young, with members just entering teenagerdom, Tiny Masters truly are, well Tiny Masters. Tapping into a classic alternative sound their music plays heavy and dirty, but made accessible by the biographical lyrics (i.e. Magician at my birthday party). Not a secret, and well known in the music world, it will be a while until Tiny Masters of Today become a household name across America. With an upcoming summer appearance at Lollapalooza Tiny Masters of Today might become a household name sooner than you think.

Inflasian

It was one Sunday afternoon while channel surfing when I came across Inflasian. There they were looking somewhat awkward performing on a community talent show. A half dozen Asian girls attempting to dance in time to the very eager lead singer as she gave it her all while singing and dancing. This is what it is all about. Raw, raw, we are talking about raw talent. These girls have success in the bag. Their Myspace page looks like an advertisement for a Hong Kong brothel. If that doesn't guarantee success, I don't know what will? The mix of sexy girls and sweet pop is a deadly combination. I look forward to watching these girls pull out the polish and shining themselves into stars.

WRAP IT UP:

HEARTSREVOLUTION

Sometimes it is more than just the music that makes an act a potential hit. With HEARTSREVOLUTION it is the visuals that draw us in and get us hooked on the electronic soundtrack playing in the background ("you mean there was music playing?") HEARTSREVOLUTION are producing videos and music that make you go back a second and third time, a sign of true hits. Perhaps not mainstream magic, but definitely something fresh that is welcome.

WRAP IT UP:
Hot Track(s): Choose Your Own Adventure
Kind of Like: Japanese school girls experimenting with heavy drugs while singing Gary Numan tunes in a bathroom stall.

PREDICTION:
A following in North America and Europe thanks to their innovative videos.
